Located approximately 350 km from Jeddah, Al Wahbah Crater (also known as Maqlaʿ Ṭamiyyah) lies on the western edge of the Harrat Kishb basalt plateau in the Hejazi region of Saudi Arabia. This crater is 4 km wide and 250 meters deep, making it one of the most natural sights in the country. The crater’s base is covered with a layer of white sodium phosphate crystals, giving it a unique appearance.
For years, locals believed that Al Wahbah Crater was the result of a meteorite crash. However, research conducted in the 1960s revealed that it’s a maar crater, formed by volcanic activity when hot lava interacts with groundwater, causing an explosive reaction.
In addition to its geological significance, Al Wahbah Crater is also marked by folklore. According to local legend, the crater was created when Tamia, a mountain spirit, fell in love with nearby Cotton Mountain. Jealousy and betrayal led to her fall, leaving behind this deep hollow in the earth.
